Love is Popcorn

the old cinema downtown—
buttery,
a pinch of salt—
you get fat and happy.
It is your soul mate.

Crackerjacks,
glazed in
viscous caramel,
satisfy for a time.
The paper toy tears at the touch of
your sticky fingers,
caramel coated kernels
draw blood from your gums;
the drop of dirty pennies
on your tongue reminds you of
that girl in middle school,
the one with braces.
